Thanks for purchasing 3 month's of access to the texAS400 AS/400 - iSeries. Your User ID and Password are in the subject of the email. AS/400, iSeries, i5, System i are all different marketing terms for what I call the AS/400 or iSeries. You can now access and program on the texAS400 AS/400: create files and other objects create source code compile programs write and run queries run programs even print reports on your PC printer ------------------------- AS/400 Display Connection ------------------------- First, here is a short discussion of AS/400 terminal emulation. Because you are connecting via the internet (TCP/IP), you will use telnet. Telnet was created by the brilliant Unix guys who implemented TCP/IP. While Telnet for Unix is functional for connecting to the AS/400, it is not what you should use. The reason is that the AS/400 uses screen attributes and keys that are not available in basic Telnet (display attributes like reverse image and highlighting; keys like page up, page down and F24). So, you need to use a version of Telnet that is dessigned for the AS/400. Because AS/400's use a terminal data stream known as 5250, you need a Telnet 5250 emulator. Telnet 5250 emulators are known as TN5250. So, if you already have a TN5250 emulator, just point it to 24.155.82.51 or texas400.com and you should see the Texas400 AS/400 log in screen. If you don't have a TN5250 emulator, there are 3 good options: go to www.mochasoft.dk click on downloads select you OS download and install TN5250 this is technically a shareware product that is free for 30 days and then $30 for a license but, you do not have to purchase the license (even after 30 days) I recommend this emulator. It is very small (about a MByte and installs very quickly). Once installed, start the MochaSoft emulator, click on FILE and EDIT and specify 24.155.82.51 as the host (or texas400.com). DO NOT specify a device name (leave it blank). Then click on FILE and Connect. a second option requires that you use Internet Explorer as a broswer. Go to www.texas400.com Scroll to the very bottom and click on "terminal" Install the Add-in to your browser You should see the texAS400 log in screen. a third option is to install this freeware TN5250 emulator: http://www.texas400.com/freeTN5250.html Specify 24.155.82.51 or texas400.com as the host. Do not specify a device name (leave it blank). This is a crude emulator in that it the window doesn't change size. It works but is my least favorite option. Note that if you key something really invalid like an alpha character in a numeric field, you will may need to press the "RESET" key to unlock the keyboard. The "RESET" key is usually mapped as the "CTRL" key at the bottom left of your keyboard. ------------ Your Library ------------ You have a library with the same name as your User ID. When you sign on, your library is set up as your "current library". You have full authority to your library. You can create objects in your library. -------------- Setting up PDM -------------- When you start out, your library is empty. If you want to program, you will need to create some source physical files to hold your source code. I suggest that you use the following commands to set up source physical files for CL, DDS, RPG and RPGLE Replace USER??? with your library name: CRTSRCPF USER???/QCLSRC CRTSRCPF USER???/QDDSSRC CRTSRCPF USER???/QRPGSRC CRTSRCPF USER???/QRPGLESRC 112 You are allowed to compile programs interactively (not in batch). I suggest that you do. Make a few changes to the default values in SEU (you may know it as PDM). STRPDM Take option 3 Specify QCLSRC for file and USER??? for library and hit ENTER. Hit F18 (shift - F6) For "Replace Object", enter Y For "Compile in Batch", enter N For "Run in batch", enter N Hit ENTER and these values will be saved. Finally, when you entering or editing a source file, I suggest that you hit F13 (Shift-F1) and change the top line, "Amount to Roll" to C. -------- Tutorial -------- If you are a beginner, I suggest you look at the free tutorial: http://www.texas400.com/tutas400toc.html I also highly recommend Judy Yaeger's book "Programming in RPG/400" Look for it at www.half.com. It is usulaly available for about $20. ------ Future ------ I am working on a library of source code. It will be named USER000 and will have sample DDS, CL, RPG III zand RPG IV. -------- Problems -------- email me at dmount@texas400.com or call me at 972 899-9259
